How to be a safe driver

January 24, 2017 by Paul

The roads are busier than ever and this can make driving more dangerous and stressful. You’re not able to control the actions of other drivers so here are few ways to make your journey safer.

Know your route

Check out the route you’re going to take before you leave and check the weather. Having to keep stopping to find your way causes more stress and a lot of arguments with your partner.

Keep your car in top notch condition

Follow the car owner’s manual and keep to the servicing schedule. If you notice anything starting to fail such as your windscreen wipers, make sure you replace them.

Focus on driving the car and what’s around you

You must be prepared to drive, both mentally and physically. If you are tired and not as alert you’re more likely to have an accident. Stop and have a rest if you’re starting to feel tired. A good way to stay alert is to turn down the heaters and put them on a cooler setting, this wakes up your body.

Stay under the speed limit

The speed limit is there for a reason. Make sure you adjust your speed for the conditions so that you are in complete control of the car. When the road is wet you’ll need much more time to stop and you should take corners much slower than you would if the road is dry.

Always use your indicators

It takes no time to turn on your indicator which tells other drivers the direction you intend to take. Your indicator doesn’t give you the right of way but allows other drivers to slow down and not rear end you when you turn.

If you’ve ever been behind a driver that doesn’t use their indicator it can be very nerve racking as you don’t know when they’re going to turn! Give these drivers a wide berth and let them get further ahead of you so there’s less risk of an accident. Top Tests can help you with the Highway Code.

Wear your seatbelt

Everyone in the car should be wearing a seatbelt. Wearing a seatbelt is the best way to make sure you will be as safe as possible should there be an accident. It’s important that passengers sitting in the back seats also have their seatbelts on, otherwise they will fly forward in a crash. It’s been shown that the weight of a rear passenger without a seatbelt on during an accident can actually crush the front passengers and cause death which would have otherwise been avoided. You also have to continuously check your seatbelts, so if they don’t feel like they are working correctly, you should find a replacement or repair service to help you like the ones on this site https://www.safetyrestore.com/webbing-replacement/119-seat-belt-strap-replacement.html. This is obvious and general safety, however, many people still don’t do it.

Keep an eye on your surroundings

Check your mirrors regularly and get a good feel for the space around the car. Check over your shoulder before turning or changing lane just in case someone sneaked into your blind spot. It’s very easy to miss smaller vehicles such as motorcycles and cyclists so look again to make sure you didn’t miss them the first time you looked.
