In some countries, these vehicles are called Pick-Ups, and in Australia, for example, they are called ‘utes,’ as in Utility. Whatever you want to call them, they are a very popular vehicle around the world. Having said that, it’s a strange decision by Mercedes not to distribute and sell the vehicle in the USA or Canada. Both countries are huge fans of this type of vehicle.
Seeing the vehicles have as yet to hit the market, used van sellers like Van Monster might have to wait a bit longer before they are featured in their resale yards. These utes, vans or pick-ups are very popular with that age group of drivers that are into an urban lifestyle, enjoying outdoor activities like biking, skiing, hiking or camping. The market growth for these types of vehicles is expected to increase from 800,000 to 2.5 million hence the reason for this move by Mercedes into snaring a share of that market.
For all the years that Mercedes have been manufacturing cars in that name, and it IS a long time, this is their first foray into the pick-up class. The statement by Volker Mornhinweg, the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans is bound to get lovers of pick-ups and utes pretty excited.
“We will open up and change the segment of mid-size pickups – with the world’s first true premium pickup for the modern urban lifestyle.” Mornhinweg continued, saying, “Our future X-Class will be a pickup that knows no compromise. Ladder-type frame, high-torque six-cylinder engine, and permanent all-wheel drive are compulsory for us. As an added value we bring safety, comfort, agility, and expressive design – in other words, everything that distinguishes vehicles bearing the Mercedes star. We will thus appeal to new customers who have not considered owning a pickup before.”
There will be two versions of this vehicle, the Explorer and the Adventurer with the latter being an off-road based vehicle.

AWD and 4WD Mercedes Benz cars in the past were rarely or at least reluctantly driven off road for fear of even minor damage. It will be interesting to see what purpose these models will be used in the future.
