The Greatest English Cricketers of All Time

April 12, 2018 by Paul

England and cricket are synonymous with each other. The birthplace of one of the most popular sports in the world, England has produced some legends and hundreds of accomplished players. Don’t worry if you didn’t train for becoming a cricketer since a young age. You could be a thumb warrior and play online-freeslots.co.uk on your mobile.

While you find the slots of your choice, learn about the cricketing legends that played for the English national team.

Sir Jack Hobbs

You can understand the popularity of the game as well as Hobbs’ contribution to the game by the fact that he was the first cricketer to receive knighthood by the Queen. His career started in 1908 and went on till 1930. If it was not for World War I, his exceptional record in the game would have gotten a lot better, especially considering that he was at his peak during the time. Still, he managed to add 5410 runs in his tally in test matches at an average of 56.94 runs. He has 15 centuries and 28 fifties to his name in tests. He also boasts of a total of 61760 runs in 834 first-class matches with 199 centuries.

Fred Trueman

Have you ever really celebrated the country’s best talent without talking about its handsome fast bowler who was absolutely lethal on the field. When he made his debut at age 21 against a touring Indian side, Trueman reduced the Indian team to 0 runs at the loss of 4 wickets in the second innings, paving the way to a historic upset. If not for him, the Indian team could have taken away the match from the English as it was trailing at barely 41 runs.

This bowler matched deadly pace with a smooth action and he dominated English bowling side for much of the 50s and brought swing bowling to new heights. In that era, when cricket was not played year-round, he managed to gain 300 test wickets. In total, he had 307 test wickets to his name in barely 67 matches. His strike rate was 49.4 and his average remained at 21.57. During this time, he performed spectacularly and added 17 five-wicket hauls and 3 ten-wicket hauls to his name.

Sir Ian Botham, Kevin Peitersen, Alistair Cook and Andrew Flintoff are other few names that became heartthrobs of the English team, winning accolades all over the world for their mind-blowing performances.
